The Responsible Gaming Committee of the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) is working to finalize a resolution regarding best practices that states should consider when developing policies to protect vulnerable players. The committee expects to reach this goal as early as the NCLGS Summer Meeting, which takes place July 7-10, 2022, at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.

The NCLGS Committee on Responsible Gaming has been researching states’ approaches to problem gambling since its 2021 Winter Meeting, all in an effort to produce a resolution regarding best practices in 2022. Once adopted by the Committee, the next step will be to present the resolution to representatives from the NCLGS member states for ratification. The resolution will then be published for the benefit of both member and non-member states alike.

The session in Boston will be chaired by the NCLGS President Keith Pickard, a Senator from Nevada, and include the following responsible gaming experts:

  • Brianne Doura-Schawohl, founder and CEO of Doura-Schawohl Consulting, which specializes in gambling policy

  • Linda Graves, Executive Director, National Association of Administrators for Disordered Gambling Services

  • Judge Cheryl Moss (retired), Gambling Treatment Diversion Court, Nevada

  • Dan Umfleet, founder and CEO of Kindbridge, which focuses on the treatment of gambling and gaming addictions

  • Mark Vander Linden, Director of Research and Responsible Gaming, Massachusetts Gaming Commission

Registration for the NCLGS Summer Meeting is open to the public; click here to view the agenda and registration options. Both NCLGS and the Westin Copley Place will adhere to CDC, state and local guidelines that govern public events.

The NCLGS Summer and Winter meetings are the only gaming conferences in the United States that focus on legislative decision-makers. Dozens of lawmakers from across the country will be among the more than 250 expected attendees.

The four-day meeting will include six NCLGS Committee presentations, two general session panels, morning and luncheon keynote addresses, International Masters of Gaming Law Masterclasses, two evening networking receptions, and an off-site tour.

Committee meetings and general sessions, which are open to all attendees, will focus on all the critical issues facing gaming, from the expansion of sports betting, igaming and ilottery to taxation, compacts with tribal operators, and new land-based gaming operations. A special session – coordinated by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas International Gaming Institute – will focus on "The Business Case for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”

Once again, the GLI Regulators Roundtable will co-locate with the NCLGS Summer Meeting, taking place July 7 at the Westin Copley Place.

The NCLGS semiannual meetings attract legislators, regulators, operators, suppliers, attorneys, lobbyists, media, and other stakeholders to discuss all aspects of regulated gaming. The meetings help state legislators from across the United States establish sound, effective gaming policies.

Last year’s Summer Meeting in Chicago had record attendance, including 40 legislators from 17 states.

The Westin Copley Place is in downtown Boston’s Back Bay area, with myriad dining and shopping options nearby. Boston’s wealth of attractions – from the Old North Church to Fenway Park to Boston Symphony Hall – are within easy reach of the hotel.
